Horowitz
A Ukrainian-born American pianist. One of the most important virtuosos of the 20th century. Born in Kiev, Ukraine (then part of Russia), he studied at the conservatory there. He made his debut in 1922 and gave concerts throughout the Soviet Union. In 1925, he moved to Berlin and performed with Furtwängler and B. Walter. In 1928, he made his US debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Beecham, which solidified his fame. In 1933, he married Toscanini's daughter Wanda. After recuperating from illness, he settled in the US in 1940 and resumed his performance career. In 1944, he became a US citizen. After a 12-year hiatus due to illness again in 1953, he returned to the music world in 1965 with a recital at Carnegie Hall. In 1986, he set foot on Soviet soil for the first time in 61 years, causing a great sensation. Known for his unique performance style supported by a refined tone and extraordinary technique, he excelled in Beethoven, Chopin, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, etc. He first came to Japan in 1983. →Pictures at an Exhibition/Barber/Milstein/Richter
