The three major trends that make up Chinese thought are Confucianism, which has political ideals and practical human ethics (ritual and filial piety) at its core; Buddhism, which has been sinicized (such as Zen, Tendai, and Pure Land Buddhism); and Taoism, which has been a religious version of ancient Taoist thought. The term "Chinese philosophy" was coined in modern times to mimic Western philosophy, and examples of the term often refer to Confucianism or the history of philosophy that considers Confucianism to be the center of Chinese thought. However, some scholars have questioned whether Confucianism (especially the study of the classics in Confucianism) corresponds to "philosophy" in the Western sense, and on the other hand, the influence of Buddhism and Taoism has gradually been seen in Confucianism. As the need for comprehensive interdisciplinary research of these three religions has become known, the term "Chinese philosophy" is now being avoided and the term "Chinese thought" is being used in preference to "Chinese philosophy."

政治理念と人間の実践倫理 (礼や孝) を中核とする「儒教」と，中国化した「仏教」 (たとえば，禅宗や天台宗，浄土宗など) と，古来の神仙思想を宗教化した「道教」とのいわゆる三教が，中国思想を構成する大思潮である。「中国哲学」の名称は，近代になって欧米の哲学の形にならって言いだされたものであり，用語例からみると，儒教あるいは儒教を中国思想の中心と考える見方から構成した哲学史を呼ぶ場合が多い。ところが，儒学 (とりわけ儒教の経学) が欧米でいう「哲学」に相当するか否かを疑問視する学者も出たり，他方，儒教にも仏教，道教からの影響が次第にみてとれるようになり，この三教の総合的学際的研究の必要性が知られるようになるに従って，現在では「中国哲学」の名を避けて「中国思想」の名が用いられる傾向にある。
