A Soto Zen monk from the late Kamakura period and the Northern and Southern Courts period. He was from Nagasaki, Uto County, Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture). One theory is that his given name was Sotsugu. He became a monk under Kangan Yoshitada of Daiji Temple in Higo, and studied under Nanpo Shomei, Keizan Jokin, and Toumei Henitsu. He then went to Yuan and studied under Furubayashi Kiyoshige, Ungai Yunxiu, and Nakamine Myohon, and also made a pilgrimage to the Soto Zen ancestral sites in various parts of Zhejiang. On his way back to Japan, he was cast away to Goryeo, but arrived safely in Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture). He succeeded Myomine Sotetsu, a disciple of Keizan, and founded Gidaji Temple in Kaga, and in his later years, with the support of the powerful Kikuchi clan of Higo, he founded Shogoji Temple and Kofukuji Temple. The "Daichi Zenshi Gessho" has long been studied by the Soto sect as a foundation for poetry, and there are also kana-based Buddhist texts and excerpts.

鎌倉後期・南北朝時代の曹洞宗の禅僧。肥後(熊本県)宇土郡長崎の人。一説に諱を祖継という。肥後大慈寺の寒巌義尹のもとで出家し,南浦紹明,瑩山紹瑾,東明慧日らに学んだのち,入元して古林清茂,雲外雲岫,中峰明本に学び,また浙江の各地に曹洞宗の祖蹟を巡礼した。帰国に際して高麗に漂流したが,無事に加賀(石川県)に到着した。瑩山下の明峰素哲の法を嗣ぎ,加賀の祇陀寺を開き,晩年に肥後の豪族菊池氏の帰依などで聖護寺,広福寺を開いた。『大智禅師偈頌』は詩偈の素養として曹洞宗門に長く参究され,また仮名法語や抄物なども存する。<参考文献>広瀬良弘『禅宗地方展開史の研究』
