masking

Japanese:
masking

Also called shielding. Eliminating interference by applying an appropriate chemical treatment to coexisting components that interfere with the detection or quantification of the target component without removing them from the system. The reagent added for treatment is called a masking agent. A complexing agent that acts selectively on interfering components (mainly metal ions) is used as a masking agent. For example, when performing EDTA titration of alkaline earth metal ions, heavy metal ions such as Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cu 2+ that interfere with the titration can be shielded by adding potassium cyanide as a masking agent. Other commonly used masking agents include ammonia, triethanolamine, EDTA, tartaric acid, and citric acid. In addition to shielding with a complexing agent, interfering ions can also be oxidized or reduced to change the ionic value and make them harmless, but in this case the added redox agent is often not called a masking agent.
