A pamphlet by T. Paine that played a major role in pushing America to take the plunge into independence. Published in Philadelphia in January 1776, it appealed straightforwardly and simply to the rejection of hereditary monarchy and the need for independence from Britain, as common sense, and sold 120,000 copies in three months. Since April 1775, armed conflict had been taking place between the mother country and the colonies, and a growing sentiment for independence was building among Americans, but loyalty to the British king and a sense of being British prevented people from taking the plunge into independence.
