Manchurian wildrice (manchurian wildrice)
A large perennial grass (illustration) that grows in clusters on the edges of ponds and rivers. It has a thick, horizontal underground stem and the leaves and stems grow in clusters. The stem is thick, cylindrical, hollow, and 1-3m tall. The leaves are broad, linear, 40-1m long, 2-3cm wide, and the leaf sheaths are somewhat spongy. Large, sparse panicles appear from August to early October. The inflorescence is over 50cm long, and produces numerous spikelets that are somewhat densely arranged on multiple branches. The spikelets are unisexual, and both males and females lack glumes and only have a single floret.
