Metropolis - metropolis (English spelling)

Originally a Greek word meaning the mother city or home country of colonists, it has come to mean a city that is the regional core in some way, such as politics, religion, or commerce, or even the largest megalopolises, such as London, New York, and Tokyo. However, in America, it does not necessarily mean only megalopolises, but can also mean small to medium-sized cities with a population of around 50,000, and the size of a metropolis is not fixed, but it certainly means the capital or functional central city of a country or region. It differs in function and size from megalopolis, which means a giant city made up of connected metropolitan areas.

もとギリシア語で植民者の母都市・母国を意味したものが、政治・宗教・商業などなんらかの点で地域の中核となっている都市、さらにはロンドン、ニューヨーク、東京のように最大級の巨大都市をいうようになった。しかしアメリカではかならずしも巨大都市のみでなく人口5万程度の中小都市をいう場合もあり、メトロポリスの規模は一定したものではないが、一国または一地方の首都ないし機能的中心都市を意味することは確かである。大都市地域が連接した巨帯都市を意味するメガロポリスとは機能的にも規模としても異なる。
