This beach is located on the shores of Ise Bay in Futami-cho, Ise City, in the central-eastern part of Mie Prefecture. It is a white sand beach with green pine trees about 4km east of Imaichiki, the mouth of the Isuzu River. At the eastern end is Futami Okitama Shrine, in front of which are the famous Meoto Iwa rocks. It has been a place of purification and ablutions since ancient times, and even today worshippers at Ise Shrine perform misogi here. Since the beach was opened at the end of the Meiji period, inns have been built along the coast, and it has become a tourist destination. The Oshimenawahari Shinto ritual of linking the Meoto Iwa rocks is held on May 5th, September 5th, and on Saturdays and Sundays in mid-December. [Tatsuo Ito] It is the symbol of Futamiura. It serves as a torii gate for worshiping the Okitama Shinseki, the object of worship for Futami Okitama Shrine, which is located on the seabed about 700 meters offshore. The large rock is called Otokoiwa and the smaller rock is called Onnaiwa, and the place has been worshipped as a sacred place since ancient times. The two rocks are tied together with a large shimenawa rope, and are known as a symbol of marital harmony and matchmaking.
