This is the largest geomagnetic fluctuation occurring worldwide, lasting 1-2 days. It often occurs 2-3 days after a solar flare. It occurs when the magnetosphere is enveloped in a high-speed plasma flow released into interplanetary space by a solar flare. Some magnetic storms show a recurrence with a solar rotation period of 27 days. These occur in connection with high-speed flows in the solar wind. When a flare occurs, the plasma in the flare region rapidly accelerates and expands, releasing a high-speed plasma flow accompanied by a shock wave at the front.
