Mount Daisetsu

Japanese: 大雪山 - だいせつざん
Mount Daisetsu
A group of volcanoes in the northwest of the Ishikari Mountains in central Hokkaido. It is an active volcano that is constantly under observation. It stretches 15km east to west and 10km north to south, with its highest peak being Mount Asahi (2,291m), the highest point in Hokkaido. There are more than ten andesite volcanoes over 2,000m high, forming the roof of Hokkaido. The central crater, Ohachidaira, has a caldera with a diameter of 2km, and around it are stratovolcanoes such as Mount Hokuchin (2,244m), Mount Ryoundake (2,125m), Mount Kurodake (1,984m), Mount Akadake (2,078m), Mount Hakuundake (2,230m), and Mount Asahidake. It belongs to Daisetsuzan National Park. It is known as a treasure trove of rare alpine plants such as Narrow-leaved Urupsou, Siberian mugwort, Siberian anemone, and Japanese lily, and from mid-July to mid-August, you can see flower fields of Siberian kozakura, Miyama ramosa, Miyama gentian, and Dicentra at altitudes above 1,700m. Rare animals and insects such as pikas, chipmunks, Yezo deer, Daisetsu takane kage, Asahi leopard butterflies, Pale-legged butterflies, and Daisetsu hitori are also inhabiting the mountain, and in 1977 the entire mountain was designated a special natural monument by the government (→Natural Monument).
