…It flows through a plain with an average width of 300 km toward the Deccan Plateau, merging with the Yamuna River coming from Delhi and Agra at Allahabad, and joining the Gomati River, the Ganga River, and the Gandak River flowing down from the north as it passes through Varanasi (Benares) and Patna, and the Son River from the Deccan Plateau in the south. The plain is made up of thick alluvial deposits carried by the main and tributaries of the Ganga, and is topographically divided into the relatively low-lying land along the river, the Khadar, and the inter-river area, the Bangar, where deposits were made in an earlier period. The former is often flooded during the rainy season, but the latter has been irrigated since ancient times and is almost entirely cultivated, with double cropping of rice and wheat, or wheat and sugarcane, etc. …
