A perennial grass of the Gramineae family, distributed in the temperate zone of East Asia and growing in mountain and field grasslands throughout Japan. The culms are upright and pale green. The leaves are broad, linear, somewhat hard, with serrated edges and a leaf sheath at the bottom. From summer to early autumn, the plant produces large, sparse panicles at the top of the culm. The spikelet consists of one flower on a short pedicel. The fruit has long, twisted awns.
