A mountain range in the western part of Sichuan Province, China. It is the easternmost of the mountain ranges that make up the Hengduan Mountains, and is bounded on the east and west by two river valleys, the Dadu River, a tributary of the Min River, and the Xianshui River, a tributary of the Yalong River, which run parallel to each other. It stretches for about 500 km from north to south. The highest peak, Mount Konga (7,556 meters), towers in the center, and is surrounded by 6,000-meter-class high peaks with perpetual snow and glaciers, and the general altitude is 4,500 to 5,000 meters. The valley bottom is warm at 1,500 to 2,000 meters, and mixed forests and coniferous forests grow on the mountainside up to an altitude of about 3,500 meters. It is a habitat for wild animals such as snow leopards and pandas. Both the mountain range and the river valley run north to south, making it an obstacle to east-west transportation. The Tibetan trade route that passes through Oridashan Pass, located almost in the center of the mountain range, has been in use for some time, but in 1954 the Sichuan-Tibetan Highway was opened here.
