Duiker - Daikar (English spelling) duiker

A general term for animals in the genus Duiker, order Artiodactyla, family Bovidae, class Mammalia. Cephalophus antelopes are widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, and mostly live in forests and thick brush. Although small in size, they vary in height from 30 to 85 cm and weight from 8 to 63 kg. Both sexes have spike-shaped horns that are 3 to 9 cm long. Their body color varies from ochre, reddish brown to black. They usually live alone in pairs, and are said to maintain territories even outside of the breeding season. They mainly eat grasses, vines, leaves and twigs of shrubs, and fruit, and are also thought to catch insects, birds, and other animal matter. They are timid and cautious by nature, and are mainly nocturnal. They have a gestation period of about 120 days, and only one baby is born. The baby can run after one day. Their lifespan is about nine years. There are about 14 species, including the striped duiker C. zebra and the rough duiker C. sylvicultor , but the Cape duiker is considered to be a separate genus, often referred to as Sylvicapra grimmia , and its habitat is not deep forest but brushland. For this reason, Cephalophus is sometimes considered to be in the genus Cephalophus and Sylvicapra in the genus Sylvicapra.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科ダイカー属に含まれる動物の総称。この属Cephalophusのアンテロープは、サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカに広く分布し、多くは森林や深い茂みに生息する。体は小形であるが、体高30～85センチメートル、体重8～63キログラムと変化に富む。角(つの)は雌雄にあり、長さ3～9センチメートルでスパイク状。体色は黄土色、赤褐色から黒色までさまざまである。普通、単独かつがいで生活し、繁殖期以外でも縄張りをつくっているといわれる。草やつる草、低木の葉や小枝、果実をおもに食べ、ほかに昆虫や鳥などの動物質もとると思われる。性質は臆病(おくびょう)で警戒心が強く、おもに夜行性である。妊娠期間は120日ほどで、1産1子。子は1日たつと走れるようになる。寿命は9年前後。シマダイカーC. zebra、コシキダイカーC. sylvicultorなど14種ほどがあるが、ケープダイカーだけは別属とされ学名はSylvicapra grimmiaとされることが多く、生息地も深い森林でなくやぶ地である。そのためCephalophusをモリダイカー属、Sylvicapraをヤブダイカー属とすることもある。
