A Soto sect temple in Takanawa, Minato Ward, Tokyo. Its name is Banshozan. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. In 1612 (Keicho 17), Monan Sokan of Daichuji Temple in Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture) founded the temple in Soto Sakurada after Tokugawa Ieyasu converted to it, but it burned down and was moved to its current location in 1641 (Kan'ei 18). In 1677 (Enpo 5), it became one of the three Edo temples of the Soto sect, along with Sosenji Temple in Hashiba (Taito Ward) and Seishoji Temple in Atago (Minato Ward). This is the family temple of the Ako Asano clan in Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture). When Asano Naganori committed seppuku in 1701 (Genroku 14), he was buried here, and in 1703, Oishi Yoshio and other Ako samurai committed seppuku and were also buried here. In the past, the Sengaku-ji school was established here with the support of the Niwa clan, lords of Fukushima Nimatsu Castle, and it was a training ground for Soto Zen Buddhist students. Within the temple's stone fence are the graves of Asano Naganori and his wife Yozeiin, and on the southern hill are the graves of the 47 Ronin.
