The capital of Lugo province in Galicia, northwest Spain. Population 88,414 (2001). It is located on the left bank of the upper reaches of the Minho River, at an altitude of 454 meters overlooking the valley floor. Surrounded by rich agricultural and livestock areas, the city is a distribution center for agricultural products, and is home to a large modern butcher's factory with refrigeration and a meat canning factory. The city's name comes from the Celtic town of Lug, and became the regional capital of Lucus Augusti during the Roman period. The old town is completely surrounded by Roman walls (3rd century) with 85 towers. It is famous for its Romanesque cathedral (built in 1129).
