Book of Daniel

Book of Daniel
A book in the Old Testament (partly in Aramaic). In the Hebrew Old Testament canon, it is included in the books of the prophets in modern translations. It contains the legends of Daniel, a young Jewish nobleman taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar, and the record of the visions given to Daniel. Part 1 (chapters 1-6) is told in the third person, and its six central episodes (Daniel's solving of the king's dreams and mysteries, and miracles that happened to Daniel and the young man) show the wisdom and power of the God of Israel and the unyielding faith and wisdom of the people of Israel. Part 2 (chapters 7-12) is told in the first person, and Daniel's visions show the struggles between nations and powers, the suffering of the Jews, the fall of those who rebelled against God, the coming of the Messianic age, the judgment of the world, and the eternal kingdom given to the saints by God from the Persian era to the time of Antiochus Epiphanes. It was believed to have been written by Daniel in Babylon in the 6th century BCE, but the current theory is that it was written under Daniel's name during the persecution by Antiochus Epiphanes in the 2nd century BCE. In the Roman Catholic Old Testament, the Book of Daniel includes the Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Children, Susanna, and Bel and the Dragon, which are considered apocryphal in Judaism and Protestantism.
