Seiseki (English spelling) Shì Shí

Japanese: 世碩 - せいせき（英語表記）Shì Shí

An ancient Chinese thinker. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Chin (Henan Province). It is said that he wrote 21 chapters of "The Prince," but they are long lost. According to Wang Chong's "Lunheng" of the Later Han Dynasty, during the Zhou Dynasty, Shishuo said, "There are good and bad elements in human nature, and if we nurture and cultivate that goodness, we will become good people, but if we encourage the badness, we will become evil people." This may have been the earliest commentary on human nature. Wang Chong praised this theory as being extremely correct. [Hihara Toshikuni]

中国，古代の思想家。生没年不明。陳(河南省)の人。《世子》21篇を著したと伝えられるが，つとに亡失した。後漢の王充の《論衡》によると，周の時代に，世碩は〈人の性には善なる要素と悪なる要素とがあり，その善性を養い育てれば善人となり，悪性を助長すれば悪人になる〉と述べたという。これは性についての最も早い論述であろう。王充はその説をすこぶる正（せいこく）を得たものと称揚している。【日原利国】
