Kibinago (Kibinago) - Kibinago (English spelling) blue sprat

Kibinago (Kibinago) - Kibinago (English spelling) blue sprat
A marine fish of the Clupeidae family (illustration). It is also called Kimiwashi, Hamago, and Kiminago. Its back is blue-green and its belly is silvery-white. A wide silvery-white band runs down the center of its side, overlapping with a slightly thinner indigo band for a vivid look. It resembles the round herring, but can be distinguished by the fact that its pelvic fins are located on a perpendicular line from the dorsal fin. A southern fish, it is widely distributed in tropical waters, and in Japan it is found south of Chiba Prefecture. It usually lives in large schools in the open sea, but enters inland bays during the spawning season.
