Japanese: 誥 - こう

In ancient China, this was called the royal decree. This character was used because it meant to announce something to someone through words, and in the Shangshu, the words Kang Ho, Da Ho, and Jiu Ho all belong to this category, and were proclaimed to the subjects in impressive words. Since the appointment of government officials and the bestowal of titles were also done through decrees, the word was used exclusively in this sense in later generations, and the official orders were called Sei Ho, Ho Ming, and Ho. The decrees were generally bound in fine twill silk and stamped with a large red seal, and in the Qing dynasty, they were written in both Manchu and Han. [Ikeda Atsushi]
