Distance measuring equipment (DME)

Japanese: 距離測定装置 - きょりそくていそうち（英語表記）distance measuring equipment; DME

A type of aviation navigation aid, it is a device that allows an aircraft in flight to know the distance between itself and a ground station. It is also called DME. An interrogator installed on an aircraft transmits an interrogation pulse radio wave, and a transponder at the ground station receives it, measuring the time of the response pulse radio wave that is transmitted, converting it into distance and displaying it on an instrument. Recently, however, a method using GPS (Global Positioning System) using artificial satellites has come into widespread use to know an aircraft's own position, destination, and the distance to target points along the way.
