〘noun〙 In the ritsuryo system, exemption from taxes, labor duties, tribulations, and miscellaneous duties, in whole or in part. There were "regular exemptions" that were given based on rank or job, and "temporary exemptions" that were given to those who had been abroad, filial children or virtuous wives, those whose parents had died, those who had experienced disasters, happy or sad events, provinces and counties that had accompanied the Emperor on a journey, provinces that were the source of long life, and provinces that had become battlefields. 〘名〙令制で、租・庸・調および雑徭の一部、または全部を免除したこと。官位・職務などによって免除する「常時の蠲免」と、外国にあった者、孝子・節婦、父母の死去にあった者、災害・慶事・凶事のあった時、行幸に供奉した国郡、悠紀主基(ゆきすき)国、戦場になった国などを免除の対象とした「臨時の蠲免」があった。蠲除(けんじょ)。→蠲符(けんぷ)。※令義解（718）職員「蠲免。〈謂。同令。応_レ免_二課役_一者。皆待_二蠲符至_一。然後注_レ免。是也〉」
