… In 1485, the Wettins were divided into two branches, the Ernstian Ernestiners, who held the electoral title, Wittenberg, and most of Thuringia, and the Albertiners, who held the Margraviate of Meissen and the former Pleissenland. After this, the two branches of the Wettins pursued different policies. For example, during the Protestant Reformation, Prince Frederick III the Wise (1486-1525), Ernstian, supported and protected Luther, while Georg der Bärtige (1500-39), Albertian, opposed it, and it was only after his death that the Reformation was introduced into the territory of his branch. Also, while the Ernstian branch became even more fragmented through the division of the estates, the Albertian branch was able to expand its territory. …
