A general term for a group of minerals that are compounds of metal elements and sulfur. In addition to minerals with atomic ratios of metal to sulfur that are close to integers, such as 1:1 (sphalerite, galena, covellite, etc.), 2:1 (arginite, chalcocite, etc.), 1:2 (pyrite, marcasite, etc.), and 3:4 (greigite, smithite), there are many non-stoichiometric compound minerals (durletite, chalcocite, pyrrhotite, etc.). Most of the major ores of heavy metals occur as sulfide minerals. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
