Horseshoe crab (Japanese name: Kabutogani)
An arthropod of the family Horseshoe crab, order Scyphomorpha, that lives in shallow waters and is closely related to arachnids (illustration). Its body is divided into a horseshoe-shaped anterior body covered by a cephalothorax, a posterior body covered by a plastron, and a sword-shaped tail, giving it the appearance of a fan shape. The body is shiny green-brown. The three body parts are connected to each other at the joints and can move. It grows to a total length of about 60 cm. The dorsal surface of the cephalothorax has two small simple eyes in the center of the front, and one compound eye on each side behind the ridges. The mouth is in the center of the ventral surface, surrounded by seven pairs of legs.
