Ashvamedha (English spelling)

Ashvamedha (English spelling)
An Indian horse shrine. A festival held by kings who conquered other countries to demonstrate their power. It was already described in the Rig Veda, and in the Mahabharata, it is said that Yudhishthira, who won a battle, performed a horse shrine. The sacrificial horse is allowed to roam freely for a year, and a selected representative follows its trail. If the horse enters a foreign country and the king does not obey, the country will be destroyed. After a year, a sacrifice is performed according to the proper rules with the horse when it returns. It is said that all the king's sins are cleansed by inhaling the smoke from the marrow of a burnt horse. It is recorded that kings such as Pushyamitra (2nd century BC), Samudragupta (4th century), and Mahendravarman (7th century) performed horse shrines.
