Toyanogata Lagoon

Japanese:
Toyanogata Lagoon

A lagoon on the right bank of the Shinano River in southern Niigata Prefecture. A low-lying lagoon behind the Kambara sand dunes, it is 4 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide from east to west. It is the only lagoon remaining in the Kambara Plain today. It once formed the center of a zero-meter zone known as the water town of Kamedago, where rice was planted on rice clogs. The surrounding rice fields are a beautiful sight with rice rack forests, and it was a typical low-lying marsh where rice was transported by rice boats. After World War II, a large drainage plantation was built on the Kurinoki River, which drains from the east of the lagoon, and the national Kamedago Land Improvement Project was carried out, and the land has now been converted into dry rice fields that allow for double cropping. In 1957, the village of Sonoki, to which the lagoon belonged, was merged into Niigata City (Konan Ward), and the lake became a popular tourist spot for citizens to relax and unwind. The lakeside is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and visitors can enjoy boating on the lake. There is also a baseball field and a sports ground. The Prefectural Museum of Natural Sciences at Meike Minami on the lake shore is one of the leading facilities in the country, allowing children to encounter living science.
