Todaiji Temple Construction Officer

Japanese: 造東大寺司 - ぞうとうだいじし

A Ryogekan directly under the Dajokan. It was established around 748 as a development of the construction organization of Konkomyo-ji Temple, the predecessor of Todai-ji Temple. Its duties included the construction of Todai-ji Temple and the Great Buddha, management of Todai-ji Temple land, sutra copying, and the construction of Ishiyama-dera Temple. It was made up of a sutra copying center, a Buddha statue construction center, and many other places, and at its peak it had a staff of one chief and one vice chief, four judges and four chief scribes, and the ranks of the four officials were comparable to those of the eight ministries. It was abolished in 789 and became the Todai-ji Temple Construction Center.

太政官直轄の令外官(りょうげかん)。748年頃東大寺の前身である金光明(こんこうみょう)寺の造営機構が発展して成立。職掌は東大寺・大仏の造営，東大寺領の経営，写経事業，石山寺の造営など。写経所・造仏所ほか多くの所(ところ)で構成され，職員は最盛期に長官(かみ)・次官(すけ)各１人，判官(じょう)・主典(さかん)各４人ほかで，四等官の位階も八省に匹敵した。789年停廃されて東大寺造寺所となる。
