Kaifuura

...This scenic spot on the Sea of Japan coast in Sanpoku Town, Iwafune County, northern Niigata Prefecture, has been designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The area is about 11 km from Torigoeyama, south of Kuwagawa Station on the Uetsu Main Line, to Echigo-Kangawa Station, in Kaifuura, where the granitic Budo Mountains have been eroded by the Sea of Japan, resulting in large cliffs and reefs several tens of meters high. The area around Sasagawa Station in the center is filled with strangely shaped rocks such as Megane Rock, Oshima, Ojishi, Meshishi, and Ebisuiwa, and cliffs covered with red pines.

…The southern half of the western part of the prefecture facing the Sea of Japan is the northern end of the Echigo Plain, and sand dunes have developed on the Senami coast. In the northern half, the mountains come up close to the coast, and the area is called Kaifuura, and has many rocky coastlines. Murakami, in the center of the prefecture, flourished as a castle town from the Middle Ages through the early modern period, and remnants of that time can still be seen, such as the key-shaped road. …
