A rather large perennial grass of the grass family found in evergreen forests in warm mountainous regions and coastal areas (illustration). It is also called Kashimagaya. It grows as a clump, with a stem 90-150 cm tall and 4-5 nodes. The leaves are basal and epistalk-forming, and the basal leaves have long stalks. The leaf blade is linear lanceolate, up to 40 cm long and 3 cm wide, tapering to a tip, and the whitish-green upper surface is usually twisted downwards, with the dark green underside exposed to form the underleaf. It blooms from August to October. The panicle is large, 30-50 cm long, with 3-7 branches arranged in a semi-whorl, and the lower branches reach 10 cm in length. 暖地の山地や近海地の常緑樹林の中に見られるイネ科のやや大型の多年草(イラスト)。カシマガヤともいう。株となり,茎は高さ90~150cm,4~5個の節がある。葉は根生および茎上生で,根生葉には長い柄がある。葉身は長さ40cm,幅3cmに達し,線状の披針形で,先端はしだいに細まり,白っぽい緑色をしている表は普通よじれて下に回り,深緑色の裏面が表に出て裏葉になっている。8~10月に開花する。円錐花序は大きく,長さ30~50cm,3~7本の枝が半輪生し,下方の枝は長さ10cmに達する。
