A general term for insects of the Coleoptera family Metoecusidae. Most are around 10mm long. The body is streamlined, narrows backwards, and laterally compressed. The head is vertical. The elytra are long and slender, with pointed tips, and many open backwards, but some are completely lacking. The antennae are usually feathery in males and comb-like in females. Most larvae parasitize wasps, but some attach to beetles and cockroaches, and are known to undergo hypermetamorphosis. There are about 400 species known worldwide and about 10 species known in Japan. The black giant flower fly Metoecus satanus is around 10mm long, black all over, and the abdomen of the female is yellowish brown. It parasitizes the nests of the Japanese hornet and is distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Sakhalin, Tibet, etc. Others include Macrosiagon masutum and M. iwatai , which parasitize wasps, and several species whose habits are unknown. Species that parasitize beetles include Pelecotoma septentrionalis and Pelecotomoides tokejii .
