Hyoko Lake

Japanese:
Hyoko Lake

This artificial lake is located in Agano City, Niigata Prefecture. It is famous as a migratory site for swans, and is designated as a national natural monument. It is about a 25-minute walk from Suibara Station on the JR Uetsu Main Line. It is an irrigation reservoir with a circumference of 1,230 meters and an area of 10 hectares, and was built during the Edo period. Swans began migrating from Siberia in the winter in 1950, and in 1954, nearby Yoshikawa Juzaburo, father and son, succeeded in feeding them. In the same year, it was designated as a national natural monument as the "Suibara Swan Migration Site." Every winter, thousands of swans bury themselves on the lake surface, and the sight of them gathering at the feeding grounds when they call is spectacular, and the lake is crowded with hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. The area also includes Lake Hyoko Suikin Park, which is part of the Gozu-Renpo Prefectural Natural Park. In the summer, the area is a popular day trip destination for waterfowl from Niigata.
