Japanese: 哀牢 - あいろう

A Southwestern barbarian nation founded in the southwestern region of Yunnan Province in China during the Han Dynasty. There are two theories about its tribes: Thai-speaking tribes and Tibeto-Burman-speaking tribes. According to the legend of its founding, a woman from Mount Lao, Shayi, gave birth to ten boys when she touched a sunken tree, the incarnation of a dragon, while fishing. The youngest son, Jiulong, was licked by the dragon and chosen to become the first king. At first, they had no dealings with China, but in 47 (the 23rd year of the Jianwu era), they became subordinate to China after being defeated in a war with the Later Han Dynasty, and Yongchang County was established in their place.
