Bataan Invasion - Bataan Invasion
Immediately after the outbreak of the Pacific War, the Japanese Army's 14th Army (Commander: Lieutenant General Masaharu Homma) invaded the Philippines and occupied Manila on January 2, 1942. However, during this time, the American-Philippine forces avoided a decisive battle and withdrew their main forces to the Bataan Peninsula, where they put up fierce resistance from heavily fortified positions. As a result, the Japanese army suffered heavy losses, but with increased military strength, they captured the peninsula in early April and occupied the Corregidor fort on May 7, completely taking control of the entire Philippines.
