When a part of a country seeks independence and its domestic law recognizes limited sovereignty, the country is called the suzerain and remains a sovereign state, whereas the part of the country seeking independence becomes a semi-sovereign state known as a dependent state, vassal state, or attached state. However, even though dependent states are also semi-sovereign states, they are considered part of the mother country, unlike protectorates (protectorates and protected states), and therefore are involved in wars waged by the suzerain and are bound by treaties concluded by the suzerain. Before gaining independence in 1949, Mongolia was considered to have been under the suzerainty of China. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
