Rental room - kashizashiki

The official name for a brothel. After the Prostitute Emancipation Law of 1872 (Meiji 5), brothels were renamed rented rooms, as they were rooms rented out for prostitutes to operate in. In substance, nothing has changed. Rental rooms were operated under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior, and were not permitted to operate outside of designated areas. Their existence or abolition was determined by each prefecture, and police stations were responsible for enforcement. They were classified according to their size, and the so-called large establishments had as many as a dozen or so employees, including prostitutes and prostitutes, in addition to the prostitutes. They disappeared with the abolition of the licensed prostitution system in 1946 (Showa 21).

遊女屋の公称。1872年（明治5）の娼妓(しょうぎ)解放令以後、娼妓が営業するための座敷を貸すものとして遊女屋を貸座敷と改称した。実質は従前と変わっていない。貸座敷の営業は内務省の統轄のもとに、指定地以外での営業は許されず、その存廃は各府県がこれを定め、警察署が取締りにあたった。その規模により等級を分けられたが、いわゆる大店(おおみせ)では娼妓のほか、妓夫(ぎゆう)、遣手(やりて)らの使用人が十数人に及んだ。1946年（昭和21）公娼制廃止とともに消滅した。
