The first king of the Bagratid dynasty of Armenia. Reigned 885-890. In 856 he became commander-in-chief of the Armenian princes' armies, and in 862 he was given the title of "Grand Prince of Armenia, Georgia, and the whole Caucasus" by the Abbasid Caliph. In 885 he was given the title and crown of king by both the Caliph and the Byzantine Emperor, and was also proclaimed king by a council of Armenian princes and high clergy. Although he was a brilliant military commander, he achieved national independence and unity through political skill rather than war.

アルメニア，バグラト朝初代の王。在位885‐890年。856年アルメニア人諸侯軍の総司令官の地位に就き，862年にはアッバース朝のカリフから〈アルメニア，グルジア，および全カフカス大侯〉の称号を，次いで885年にはカリフ，ビザンティン皇帝の双方から王号と王冠を与えられ，アルメニア人諸侯，高位聖職者の会議でも王位に推戴された。卓越した武将であったが，戦争よりはむしろ政治的手腕で民族の独立と統一を達成した。
