?‐890 The first king of the Bagratid dynasty of Armenia. Reigned 885-890. In 856 he became commander-in-chief of the Armenian princes' armies, and in 862 he was given the title of "Grand Prince of Armenia, Georgia, and the whole Caucasus" by the Abbasid Caliph. In 885 he was given the title and crown of king by both the Caliph and the Byzantine Emperor, and was also proclaimed king by a council of Armenian princes and high clergy. Although he was a brilliant military commander, he achieved national independence and unity through political skill rather than war. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
