Taj Mahal

Located in the city of Agra, India, this mausoleum was built by Shah Jahan of the Mughal Empire for his beloved wife. Its name comes from the name of the wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began around 1632 and took 22 years (some say 17) to complete. A vast garden is surrounded by walls on three sides, and the white marble mausoleum stands in the center of the northern edge, bordered by the Yamuna River. There are minarets (spires) at the four corners of the 56m square base, and the large dome in the center of the mausoleum is 58m high. The walls are decorated with inlaid stones of various colors, and there is intricate decoration with openwork and relief carvings.

インドのアーグラ市にあり，ムガル帝国のシャー･ジャハーンが造営した愛妃の廟墓。名称は妃の名ムムターズ･マハルMumtāz Mahalに由来する。1632年ころ着工し，22年(一説に17年)かけて完成させた。広大な庭園の三方を壁で囲み，ヤムナー川で限られた北辺中央に白大理石造の廟堂が建つ。56m四方の基壇の四隅にミナレット(尖塔)があり，廟堂の中央の大ドームは高さが58mある。さまざまな色の石を象嵌して壁面を飾るほか，透し彫や浮彫による繊細な装飾がある。
