Gonjuro Ichikawa

Japanese: 市川権十郎 - いちかわごんじゅうろう

1848-1904 A Kabuki actor from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born on September 15, 1858. Debuted in Kyoto. Adopted by the 2nd Arashi Rikaku, and succeeded him as the 3rd. Performed in Edo from 1867. In 1871, served time in prison for his involvement in the poisoning of Yoarashi Okinu's husband. In 1874, became a disciple of the 9th Ichikawa Danjūrō and took the stage name Gonjūrō. A leading actor, he excelled in samurai matters. Died on March 27, 1904. Age 57. Born in Kyoto. Real name Okada Kikusaburo. Former names Arashi Yoshisaburo (3rd) and Arashi Rikaku. Haiku name Koie. Stage name Kawasakiya.

嘉永(かえい)元年9月15日生まれ。京都で初舞台。2代嵐璃珏(りかく)の養子となり,3代をつぐ。慶応3年から江戸で演じる。明治4年夜嵐お絹の夫毒殺事件に関係して服役。7年9代市川団十郎の門人となり権十郎を襲名。立役(たちやく)で武士事を得意とした。明治37年3月27日死去。57歳。京都出身。本名は岡田菊三郎。前名は嵐芳三郎(3代),嵐璃鶴(りかく)。俳名は鯉江。屋号は川崎屋。
