Ioannina is the capital of the prefecture of Ioannina in the northwest of Greece, in the northern part of the Epirus region. It is also called Ioannina or Yannina. It has a population of 70,203 (2001). It is a trading center located almost in the center of the Epirus region, on the west shore of Lake Ioannina (old name: Lake Panbotis). It trades grain, fruit, and wine, and also produces textiles and metal products. It was founded in the early 6th century, occupied by the Normans in the 11th century, and came under the control of the Ottoman Turkish Empire in the 15th century. From the 18th to the early 19th century, it became the residence of Ali Pasha, a local lord from Albania who was a pioneer of the Greek independence movement, and once flourished as an international commercial city. It has been a part of Greece since 1913. The city, surrounded by a fortress and with its bazaars and mosques, has an oriental atmosphere.
