One of the two scripts used along with Cyrillic to write Old Church Slavonic, the language of the oldest Slavic documents. It is said to have been created in the 860s by Cyril (Slavic name Cyril), who is said to be the apostle of the Slavs. This script is based on accurate observation of Slavic pronunciation and is, in principle, an alphabet with one letter per sound, with only a very small number of letters indicating two sounds per letter. It is said to have been established about 50 years before the Cyrillic alphabet, and the two scripts are almost identical. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
