Also called the "sashikiri" method. A special support method used when digging tunnels in collapsible soil or rock, clearing old mines, preventing collapsed sections of the face, and repairing them. Shaved logs, half timber, or planks called "sashiya" (or simply "ya") are driven into the top of the beams or to the sides of the legs of the support pillars to prevent the ceiling and side walls from collapsing while excavating. Steel sheet piles are often used for vertical shafts. Sashiya on the ceiling only is called "tenbansashiya," and when it is used on the side walls as well, it is called "sanpo-sashiya." 差切り法ともいう。崩壊性の土砂や岩石のなかに坑道を掘削したり,旧坑の取明けや切羽の崩落個所のばれ込防止や修復などを行う場合に用いられる特殊の支保法。差矢 (または単に矢) と呼ばれる先端をそいだ丸太,半割材,板材などを支柱の梁の上や脚の側方に打込み,天井,側壁の崩壊を防止しながら掘削を行う。竪坑の場合にはしばしば鋼製の矢板が用いられる。天井だけの差矢を天盤差矢,側壁にも行う場合は三方差矢などという。
