The Swiss rescue dog (illustration) originated in Switzerland. It is well known for rescuing people lost in the Alps and for being the largest dog of any breed. It is said to have been developed around the 10th century based on the Tibetan mastiff, and the name of the breed (the English pronunciation of St. Bernard) was born from the fact that the monks of the St. Bernard Abbey at the St. Bernard Pass on the Swiss-Italian border used this dog to rescue people lost in the mountains. However, it seems that it was only around the 16th century that the dog was actually kept and bred at the monastery. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
