One of the leading educational scholars to emerge from Germany in the 17th century. Born in northern Germany. Starting with reforms to language education, he worked on reforming education in general. Concerned about the division of Germany and the state of armed conflict at the time, he hoped to realize a peaceful society by unifying language, government, and religion. He worked hard to establish new experimental schools and compile textbooks, but neither of these efforts went as planned. He is said to have been the first person to advocate an educational method that conforms to the natural order, and to recognize the inherent value of methods in education.

17世紀ドイツに輩出した教育学者の代表の一人。北ドイツに生まれる。言語教育の改革から出発し，教育全般の改革にとりくむ。当時のドイツの分裂と武力による抗争状態を憂え，言語と政府と宗教を統一することによる平和な社会の実現を願った。実験的な学校の新設，教科書の編集などに力をつくしたが，いずれも志どおりには運ばなかった。自然の秩序に合致した教育方法を説き，教育における方法の固有の価値を認めた最初の人と評される。
