1571‐1635 One of the leading educational scholars to emerge from Germany in the 17th century. Born in northern Germany. Starting with reforms to language education, he worked on reforming education in general. Concerned about the division of Germany and the state of armed conflict at the time, he hoped to realize a peaceful society by unifying language, government, and religion. He worked hard to establish new experimental schools and compile textbooks, but neither of these efforts went as planned. He is said to have been the first person to advocate an educational method that conforms to the natural order, and to recognize the inherent value of methods in education.
