...He then attracted attention with his work Agura Nabe (1871-72), which captured the social conditions of the Meiji Restoration. After the promulgation of the Sanjo Educational Constitution in 1872, he withdrew from writing for a while, but returned with the revival of newspaper journalism, founding and presiding over Kanayomi Shimbun and Iroha Shimbun, among others, and publishing gibum, continuations, and theater reviews. Among his works, Takahashi Oden Yasha Monogatari (1879) was a new type of realistic story that combined news and storytelling, and contributed to the revival of Meiji-era gesaku (comic writing). ...
