One section cut - One passage cut

Japanese:
One section cut - One passage cut

A type of shakuhachi with five holes and one section. It is named after the bamboo tube that contains only one section. The standard length is 1 shaku 1 sun 1 bu (approximately 33.6 cm), which is much shorter and thinner than the Fuke shakuhachi. It is made from the middle of a Madake bamboo trunk, and the section is placed between the fifth hole (the back hole) and the fourth hole. It has the same mouthpiece as the shakuhachi, with the outer surface cut off at an angle, but there are few that have a cow horn embedded in it, and it differs from the Fuke shakuhachi in that the end closer to the root is placed at the top. It is said to have been introduced in the mid-Muromachi period, and was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Compared to the Fuke shakuhachi, the basic playing method is almost the same, but the volume and range are inferior, and the mouthpiece and finger holes are small, making the technique somewhat difficult. As a result, it gradually declined, and although it was temporarily revived in the early 19th century under the name Kotake, it lost its transmitters after the mid-19th century.
