Australian mystery writer. Born in England, he moved to Australia in 1911. In over 30 novels, he portrayed the mixed race detective Napoleon Bonaparte (Bonnie), born to an Aboriginal mother and a white father, and has earned a reputation not only in Australia but also in the UK and the US. Before writing his first novel in 1927, he traveled the outback as a swagman, so not only does his novels vividly depict the life and scenery of the vast outback, but he also skillfully incorporates some of this into the causes of crimes and clues to investigations.
