About nine species are found on islands in the South Pacific, mainly New Caledonia, and this tree of the Balanopsidae family has attracted attention for its structure similar to the cupule of the Fagaceae family. It is an evergreen tall tree. There are two types of leaves, with those at the base of the branches being scale-like, and the leaves usually grow in whorls at the ends of the branches. It is dioecious. The flowers are small and inconspicuous. The male flowers form short catkins with several stamens and the perianth is very vestigial or absent. The female flowers are solitary and the base is surrounded by numerous scales. The ovary is incompletely divided into 2-3 lobes and has an equal number of long styles.
