It is one of the three main islands of the United States Virgin Islands in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It has an area of 73 km2 and a population of 48,166 (1990). It is volcanic and has little flat land. It became a Danish territory in 1666, and sugar cane cultivation was carried out on a large scale. In the mid-18th century, it prospered due to the slave trade from Africa, but declined after the emancipation of the slaves in 1848, and was sold to the United States in 1917.
