...In Britain, there was debate over whether New Zealand should become part of the Australian colony or become a new destination for immigration, but the New Zealand Company was founded in 1938, and the first immigrants arrived near the current capital, Wellington, in January 1940.

On 6 February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Resident William Hobson (1790-1842) and about 50 Maori chiefs at Waitangi on the Bay of Islands. By this treaty, the Maori ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria and gave her sole right of purchase of land.
